

Cuff down; 2 or 1 circular needle
(easily adapted to DPNs)

Gauge: 3.75 sts and 5.5 rows/inch
Needles: US size 10
Yarn: approx 72 yds of bulky yarn which will give above gauge
Note: Sl 1 should always be slipped purlwise.
Cast on: (I use one size larger needle to cast on)
Cast on 22 sts loosely. Divide sts on 2 circular needles as follows:
Needle 1 (N1): 11 heel sts
Needle 2 (N2): 11 instep sts
Join, being careful not to twist sts
Cuff/Leg:
Work in K1, P1 for 3" OR
work in K1, P1 for 1" and stockinette st for 2 more inches.
Complete sts on N2.
Heel:
Heel flap worked on the 11 sts on N1.
With RS facing, work back and forth as follows:
(NOTE: On first row ONLY, work 2 sts in patter, M1, complete row - 12 sts)
Row 1: *S1, K1. Repeat from * to end.
Row 2: Sl 1, p to end.
Repeat these 2 rows until 12 rows are complete.
Turn Heel:
Row 1: (RS) Sl 1, K6, ssk, K1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, k4, ssk, k1, turn
Row 4: Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Heel Gusset:
Work across heel flap sts on N1. With the tip of N1, pick up 6 sts along
the side of the heel, plus one more from the row below the first instep st
to prevent a hole (7 sts picked up).
N2: Work across 11.
With point of N1, pick up a st from the row below the first heel st to
prevent a hole, pick up 6 sts along the right side of the heel (7 sts picked
up).
Work remainder of sts on N1. Work sts on N2.
Shape Gusset:
Round 1: N1: K1, ssk, work to 3 sts before end of N1, k2tog, k1.
N2: work even
Round 2: Work even on both needles.
Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 23 sts remaining. Dec 1 st in the
heel section on last even round (22 sts)
Foot:
N1: bottom of foot
N2: instep sts
Continue working in rounds until foot measures 4" (or 1" less than desired
length). complete sts on N2.
Shape classic toe:
Round 1:
N1: K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
N2: K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Round 2: Work even.
Repeat these two rounds until 14 sts remain (4 rounds).
Repeat Round 1 (10 sts).
Finishing:
Holding N1 and N2 together, graft (Kitchener) sts on N1 and N2 together.
Weave in ends on inside of sock.
Work Second Sock.
Note: if you don't want to graft the toe, try working a Star Toe rather
than the Classic Toe. If you need help with the Star Toe, just let me
know.
